TORONTO – Canadian researchers say they have developed a coating which could reduce the amount of microplastic fibres shed when washing synthetic fabrics by more than 90 per cent.
The laundering of synthetic fabrics, including polyster, nylon, acrylic and rayon, is widely regarded as a major cause of potentially harmful microplastic pollution.
Scientists at the University of Toronto say that a silicon-based organic polymer coating, already found in many household products, could significantly reduce this.
