Manufacturing in France reduces the carbon footprint of textiles while supporting employment #120

2021/07/02

In order to achieve the objectives set by the Paris Agreement by 2050 and to effectively combat climate change, the French textile industry points out that textile manufacturing in France emits little CO2 and makes it possible to reduce the carbon footprint of textile products in a decisive way. The Union des Industries Textiles therefore wanted to carry out a comparative study on the carbon footprint of 17 pieces of clothing and household linen.

The study “Carbon footprint of textiles in France” shows that producing textiles in France emits half as much CO2 as producing them in a country with a carbonaceous energy mix, as is the case today.
This study was carried out by the Cycléco consultancy specialising in environmental impact studies on the analysis of the entire life cycle of the product, from the raw material to their use by the end consumer, and depending on whether these products were manufactured in France or abroad.
The study also highlights other important sources of CO2 emission reduction such as the reduction of unsold products linked to imports (and the long supply cycle).
In order to monitor the sector’s progress, the Union des Industries Textiles proposes to improve the calculation of the carbon footprint of consumer textile products by tracing the manufacturing stages and to draw up an annual carbon barometer.
